childhood

At the time, Ivan's father, Prince Vasily the 3rd, noticed a small sore on his leg, the sore turned into a boil that stank very badly. They bled him and poured vodka on the sore because that is what the cure was. Before long, he developed a bad case of blood poisoning and died.  Ivan was crowned at age 3,  before his father died. His father asked seven boyars to run the country and take care of Ivan. At age sixteen he became a Tsar. He had a bad childhood.  He tortured animals and fed a boyar to the dogs.  When Ivan was little in public boyars would treat him like royalty, but at home they beat and abused him.

His major accomplishments

Ivan took the throne at age 3, he was a Tsar at age 16. He established a new code law for Russia, and he updated the Russian army. He also conquered the kingdom of Astraklan and the Fort of Narva.

Why he was called Ivan the Terrible

He was called Ivan the Terrible because he killed thousands of people, everyone that was against him was killed. He had a militia terrorize the country, and he had most people in Novogrod killed. (Novogrod was a major city in Russia.) As you already know in one of his many fits he killed his son.

Ivan's family

Ivan was born August 25, 1530. He was married to Anastasia who died in 1560. With Anastasia he had 6 children but only 2 grew up to be adults. Ivan was orphaned but was very powerful by age 3. His son Demitri was born after a war but was dropped in a river and drowned. He then gave birth to Ivan another son. Sadly by then he was very paranoid, and in one of his many fits he killed his son Ivan. Ivan the Terrible died March 18, 1584.

perpetrator or upstander?

Ivan the Terrible was both a perpetrator and an upstander.  He acted on behalf of others because he established a new code law and upgraded the army. However, after his wife died he became paranoid.  He was a perpetrator because he was guilty of wrong doing.  He committed crimes against his people and acted in a harmful way toward others.   He did this by killing every one who was against him. Also he killed his son in one of his many fits. He is more a perpetrator than an upstander, but he was still both.
